  • Special issue on "Class and Ethnicity in Peru" (211 p.). The editor, Pierre L. van den Berghe, contributes two bibliographic essays: 1) An "Introduction," where Marx's and especially Lenin's positions on the national question are seriously distorted, leading to a simplistic view of Latin "kitchen" Marxist traditions (see HLAS 39:1566). Unsuccessfully attempts to apply the plural society model for recent post-colonial societies (formerly under British or Dutch rule) to Peru, a country which has experienced a "shift in international hegemony" (as current Peruvian textbooks describe their initial political independence from Spain) for a century and a half; 2) A bibliographic essay, "The Use of Ethnic Terms in the Peruvian Social Science Literature," where van den Berghe's spotlight is overly selective (see HLAS 39:1567). Fortunately, the analytical tactics of contributing authors largely ignore the editor's framework. Their articles which are reviewed separately are followed by item numbers: Douglas Uzzell, "Cholos and Bureaus in Lima: Case History and Analysis" (see HLAS 37:1545); Sean Conlin, "Participation Versus Expertise" (see HLAS 37:1456); George Primov, "Aymara-Quechua Relations in Puno" (see HLAS 37:1529); Jorge A. Flores Ochoa, "Mistis and Indians: their Relations in a Micro-Region of Cuzco" (see HLAS 37:1471); Benjamin S. Orlove, "Urban and Rural Artisans in Southern Peru" (see HLAS 37:1525).
