HLAS annotation

  • Reexamines increase in forasteros in 18th century. Maintains that indigenous peoples employed migration as tactic to reduce amount of tribute they were charged; to avoid mita; and to obtain and retain land and its usage. Karen Powers (see item #bi 96011242#) substantiates Fuentealba's first two conclusions for 16th and 17th centuries. Fuentealba also reexamines largely successful efforts of the State under the Bourbons to rationalize tribute schedules and exact more tribute, as well as the socioeconomic consequences thereof.
