  • The privatization of education, social services, and banking, together with economic models that position Costa Rica as more dependent on tourism in the global economy, have contributed to the shrinking of the middle class and to gaps in the country's social development. These authors argue that "socio-occupational stratification" is a more practical analytic concept than social classes, a term they consider irrelevant for today's social reality.
