HLAS annotation: The editors have created the first full English-language translation (and the first full translation in any language) of an important Tlaxcalan Nahuatl-language text narrating a history that begins with migratory origins and concludes just prior to the arrival of the Spanish. The original document, now held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris as manuscript 254 of the Aubin-Goupil Collection, is divided into 12 chapters. The editors believe that this stage-two Nahuatl text served as one of the sources used by Torquemada, but point out as well that it contains information not found in the friar's own work. Following the editors' introduction, three versions of the manuscript known as Anónimo Mexicano are presented in parallel columns: a literal translation of the original; the editors' modified transcription, giving the text in contemporary orthography; and the English translation. Ample critical annotations are given here, making this an important and accessible new ethnohistorical resource.
