HLAS annotation: León Portilla leads a team of Mexican scholars who present a full-length study of a 258-folio manuscript preserved in the Biblioteca Nacional de México known as Cantares mexicanos, Nahuatl-language songs from central Mexico that were written down in the 16th century. The first volume (v. I) presents introductory chapters on the manuscript's history, composition, contents, and characteristic features. The second and third volumes (v. II, t. 1 and 2) present 92 songs - transcribed from the original Nahuatl and translated into Spanish. This handsome set is a fabulous addition to the study of Nahuatl song and literature.
